{"id":16,"date":"2011-02-14T09:56:40","date_gmt":"2011-02-14T09:56:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.goldenmaturity.com\/seniors-will-the-ny-budget-cuts-shut-down-your-senior-center\/"},"modified":"2011-02-23T19:46:58","modified_gmt":"2011-02-23T19:46:58","slug":"seniors-will-the-ny-budget-cuts-shut-down-your-senior-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.goldenmaturity.com\/senior-assisted-living-places\/seniors-will-the-ny-budget-cuts-shut-down-your-senior-center\/","title":{"rendered":"Seniors, will the NY budget cuts shut down your senior center?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/goldenmaturity.typepad.com\/.a\/6a0120a4ca69f4970b014e861134d4970d-pi\"\nstyle=\"display: inline;\"><img alt=\"Budget cuts\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-\n6a0120a4ca69f4970b014e861134d4970d image-full\"\nsrc=\"http:\/\/goldenmaturity.typepad.com\/.a\/6a0120a4ca69f4970b014e861134d4970d-800wi\"\ntitle=\"Budget cuts\" \/><\/a> <br \/>&#0160; <br \/>This past Thursday I attended a conference called<br \/>\nby Assembly Member  Nicole Malliotakis, and Senator Marty Golden, at the Bay Ridge<br \/>\nCommunity  Center, regarding cut backs that could end up going into effect on  April 1, 2011.<br \/>\nAlso in attendence was <em>Bobby Sackman<\/em>, Director of Public Policy for the<br \/>\n<em>Council<\/em> of <em>Senior Centers<\/em> and Services.&#0160; The budget cuts<br \/>\nproposed by Govenor Andrew Cuomo would  move 25 million dollars in funds, in title 20 of NY<br \/>\nState Budget from  Senior Centers to Child Welfare.&#0160; Thus pitting Children against<br \/>\nSeniors.&#0160; The result if these NY State budget cuts go into effect, would  mean the closing<br \/>\nof 110 Senior Centers State wide and of those 33 %  would be in the NYC area.&#0160; This is<br \/>\nan outrage.&#0160; These monies have been  allocated to title 20 for nearly 30 years.&#0160;<br \/>\nThese are not a part of the  budget listed as an entitlement and therefore they are not<br \/>\nguaranteed.&#0160;  According to Senator Golden &quot;if we loose these funds it would be<br \/>\nhighly  unlikely for us to ever gain them back.&quot;&#0160; This is extremely critical to  the<br \/>\nquality of life our seniors have.&#0160; The senior population is about to  explode over the next<br \/>\ncouple of decades.&#0160; We should be adding senior  centers and programs, not shutting<br \/>\nthem down.<\/p>\n<p>Executive Director  JoAnn Mason  of the Senior Center, said last year they wrote 300 of the<br \/>\n17,000 letters received to stop the senior center cuts.&#0160; Executive  Director Mason now<br \/>\npledges 600 letters from the member of the Center.&#0160;  How many letters will you pledge to<br \/>\nmake happen?????????<\/p>\n<p>Please take action and send letters immediately to your elected  officials, saying no to the title<br \/>\n20 cuts for senior centers.&#0160; Please  post a link to this info and spread the word before it is<br \/>\ntoo late.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you<\/p>\n<p>Annette Fisher<\/p>\n<p>Certified Senior Advisor<\/p>\n<p>Golden Maturity, Inc.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#0160; This past Thursday I attended a conference called by Assembly Member Nicole Malliotakis, and Senator Marty Golden, at the Bay Ridge Community Center, regarding cut backs that could end up going into effect on April 1, 2011.
